Kool Keyboard
The Kool Keyboard Program currently operates in a number of Melbourne primary schools and was initiated by OMS Founder, Paul Forster in 1987. The program is designed to teach students how to master the features of the keyboard and at the same time use these features to enhance the presentation of the pieces they learn.
Specially designed textbooks, "Kool Keyboard Books One and Two", are used, which focus on the skills associated with reading and technique development. The program also serves as a wonderful music foundation for students, many of whom have found it of great value when moving to other instruments.
Courses:
The Kool Keyboard Book One contains four courses; Beginners, Elementary, Primary and Senior. Each of these courses increases in difficulty, and teaches not only the basic skills as outlined above, but also familiarity with the many different styles currently in vogue on the music scene. Kool Keyboard Book Two contains selections of folk songs, Christmas songs and carols and traditional ballads.
Performance:
Opportunities are provided for students to perform in public, both through their school assemblies and also the very popular Kool Keyboard Concerts staged twice each year. All students receive two written reports each year, copies of which are forwarded to the schools involved.
Times:
Keyboard lessons are held either before school, in recess/lunch or after school, and are taken by highly qualified and experienced tutors who are chosen not only for their musical ability but also their capacity to work well with children. Lessons are provided in groups of five, ten or fifteen students, with one tutor for every five children.
Expanding:
With the steady expansion of the program, the secondary program is building each year.
